The Deep Reading Protocol
Rebuild the ability to read for an hour, ten honest minutes at a time.
- Runs for
- 14 days
- Costs you
- 10 minutes a day
The problem
You buy books, start them, drift, and quietly give up. Reading is pure sustained attention with nothing to lean on, and after years of feeds your baseline for stimulation sits above it.
The protocol
How to run it
- 1
Choose a paper book you actually want to read. Not the important one you feel you should read.
- 2
Pick a fixed time and a fixed chair. Same place, same time, every day.
- 3
Put your phone in another room. Not face-down on the table. Another room.
- 4
Read for ten minutes. Set a timer, and stop when it ends even if you want to keep going.
- 5
When your mind drifts, notice it and return to the page without judging yourself. The returning is the rep.
- 6
Once ten minutes feels easy, add five. Never add before it feels easy.
What to expect
Days one to four feel restless and slow, and you'll re-read paragraphs. Around day seven to ten the ten minutes stop being hard. By day fourteen most people catch themselves reading past the timer. That moment is the capacity coming back.
